The truth of every religious teaching – and indeed, the key to the universe – is this: you are not your body!
The sooner you digest this, the more rapidly and smoothly will you fall into alignment with All.
Let’s first calibrate the etymology, where it has two antithetical, dialectically opposed lineages.
The word used by academics, somatics (soma -> body), was not originally rendered as such.
In Vedic Tradition, which takes us to the Sanskrit, it is Soma (सोम) denoting an intoxicating/mind-altering ritual substance from a sacred plant.
Further implied was the deified essence of that substance. So, a divine nectar leading to spiritual ecstasy – or, as stated, alignment with All.
Sōma (σῶμα) the Greek application, used predominantly by academics, refers to your animated corporal sarcophagus. Simplified, the vehicle that you use to traverse this plane.
In this sense, “Sōma sēma” – (the body is a tomb).
This is a Pythagorean/Platonic aphorism, which teachings, as George James elucidates in his classic work Stolen Legacy, are an appropriation of the Ancient Wisdom Tradition of Ta’mur’e (now called Egypt).
So boom, when I say, “You are not your body,” it is to the latter connotation that I refer – the material vehicle.
Just like with your car if it backfires, has dents, or a spider-webbed window. You might be glad to not be walking, but it isn’t a feeling of great esteem. Your paint job is kinda like your outfit.
Whatever condition your ride happens to be in, maintenance is a must. You gotta change the oil, use good gas, make sure the tires aren’t bare. Even a car you’re not driving needs to have that engine turned over now and again.
When your whip is broke down looking, it’s the same as when you’re bummin’. When you’re riding in luxury, your head is high. Or even in your hooptie, when you’re fresh from the car wash!
Eligible (albeit less attractive) suitors are made attractive when they can dress - (author’s note: and women that can drive – not just operate a conveyance, but really drive? Maaaan…). But more than that; how they carry themselves, the confidence, the self esteem.
That "glow," that's not the body. There is a distinction between sexy & fine or looks good.
I have seen many a woman that has a great figure, and/or the prettiest face ever, yet I wouldn’t consider them sexy.
On the flipside of that token are women that do not have the supermodel physique, nor heart-stopping facial ‘beauty’, yet still possess that internal energy, that on-the-inside something.
They’re just… Sexy. And those with both?
Anyway, the point is, the external alone does not define.
Okay, so boom – I offer that the same applies to character. The most outwardly unremarkable people can hide within their shallows the ugliest wickedness, or conversely, a depth of integrity, the blinding light of compassion.
In many instances, the lightest beings are found hidden in less than ideal casings, and often, the outer has contributed significantly to the inner.
People that have been through the most trauma, have the most heavily impacted personas.
What is interesting is that all the various types of emotional carnage experienced produce personalities on both ends of the spectrum.
So while the event is the catalyst, it is not the determining factor of one’s make-up.
Well then what is? It is the perspective, outlook, personal projections; the motives that drive them; what they consider to be their purpose.
To minimize it, it's their attitude. This particularly includes those with actual physical challenges.
That being said, it is their concept of Life itself (‘Life’ being who/what/why they are) that ultimately results in what shows forth.
The main ingredient of which, is the capacity to look beyond identifying the essence, with the body.
